About the book
This is a highly readable story of a great school. The author leads the reader engagingly from the foundation, inspired by the free thinking of Jeremy Bentham and his contemporaries and the individualistic (not to say revolutionary in some cases) teachers, through to the present. The account does not gloss over some difficult times. But it tells how surviving, among other episodes, economic depression, the blitz and quite recently devastating fire, it has emerged an evermore robust and innovative institution.
