About the book

This book has been commissioned to celebrate 125 years of Emanuel School in Wandsworth from 1883-2008. However, as any Emanuel pupil knows, the history of the school starts much earlier than 1883. In fact the Foundation dates back to 1594, and Lady Dacre's will, followed by the granting of our royal charter in 1601 by Queen Elizabeth I. Historically speaking, Emanuel is without doubt one of London's great schools. From only 20 pupils, and one Master, to over 700 pupils, 70 teachers, 40 support staff and one Headmaster, Nigel Watson has successfully charted the development of the Foundation over the last 400 years as it has expanded and changed in ways which Lady Dacre could scarcely have imagined.

Emanuel School - An Illustrated History is an informative and authoritative history of the life, ethos and development of the school, and will absorb and delight staff, parents, pupils, governors and anyone connected to the school - past, present or future - as well as those with an interest in the history of education from Elizabethan times to the present day.
